Loving and dearly loved.

1915 - 2004

A beautiful memorial service was held in Sun City, Arizona on May 23, 2004.

Ellen joined her beloved husband and two sons at rest in Lakeview Cemetery in Tower, Minnesota during a committal service officiated by her grandson, Rev. Perry R. Bauer on July 17, 2004 at 11:00AM.

Following the service, many family and friends gathered and reminisced during a reception at the Fortune Bay Resort on Lake Vermillion.

Ellen Wilhelmenia Laugen was born to Henry and Wilhelmenia Arola in Soudan, Minnesota on July 31, 1915.  Ellen was baptized on August 20, 1916 and later confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Soudan.

Ellen and Richard Davis Laugen, Sr. were united in marriage in Soudan on April 17, 1934.  His nickname for her was “Willie.”  Family was the centerpiece of Ellen’s life, and their union was blessed with four children.  After they raised their children and moved to Virginia, Minnesota, Ellen was a dedicated nurse’s aid at Arrowhead Nursing Home; she always loved helping others.  In 1972, the couple relocated to Phoenix, Arizona to enjoy their retirement years.  She had resided at Plaza del Rio Care Center in Peoria, Arizona since August 2001.

Ellen was extremely proud of her Finnish heritage and she continued to speak Finn throughout her life with relatives and friends – usually over a cup of strong coffee!  She had been a talented vocalist and loved to go out dancing with her husband.    Ellen had a great sense of humor, was always cheerful, and freely expressed her gratitude for every favor and kindness, large or small.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers, one sister, and two sons, Lyle Allen Laugen and Richard Laugen, Jr.

Ellen is survived by two daughters: JoAnn Peterson and her husband Robert of Mesa, Arizona and Kay Marquardt and her husband Charles of Sun City, Arizona; one sister, Lila Bubash of Ely, Minnesota; daughter-in-law Joan Laugen of Eveleth, Minnesota; six grandchildren: Peter Bauer, Perry Bauer, Colleen Bauer, Derek Bauer, Cynthia Laugen, and Timothy Laugen; and nine great-grandchildren.

Ellen Wilhelmenia Laugen slept peacefully as she returned to the Lord on Wednesday evening, May 19, 2004 having reached the age of 88 years, 9 months, and 18 days.
